Here is one for all the Hemingway fans out there.
Alexander Petrov is a Russian-born, Canadian-based film director. What makes him notable are the techniques he uses to achieve his images, notably, painting with oil paints on glass, frame by frame, until he has an entire seamless movie.
Starting in 1997 and taking up nearly two and a half years of his life, Petrov slaved, painting mostly with just his fingers to achieve something spectacular; The Old Man and the Sea. When it was finally released in 1999, it won an Academy Award for best short animation. Forget what they forced you to read in high school. The full video is below.
As great as this copy is, the original was filmed for IMAX. The best translation of this is the DVD, which is currently very cheap, hovering around 6 dollars. Snag it if you like it, the behind the scenes featurette is intriguing.
