The world is scary - perilous and in peril.
You know, I am very well versed in all things Internet and I have not seen this anywhere yet… That’s why I thought I’d break this story for everyone.
I’ve only been listening to this album for about 20 minutes and I have to say, it is something else altogether (and I mean that in a wonderful way). I can tell you right now, when the “professionals” get around to reviewing this album, they aren’t going to have an easy time cramming it into any one genre. The very musical forms in this album rebel against classification, and can only loosely be defined as “experimental.”
You were past. You will future. Today you are here.
From what I can tell thus far, Fake: You Are Not Dead, A Guide to Modern Living, is an album and an art project; the brainchild of Daniel Reetz and Meg Holle, both of whom comprise the Fakeproject Corporation of America (FPCoA).
So, what is all this about then? Well, the site describes this project as a “protest against the meaningless decisions we are asked to make daily — between products, between paychecks, between political candidates — that conflate choice with free thought and individuality. You Are Not Dead apes the voice of authority, presenting absurd advice on how to live — or, more accurately, how to remain Not Dead. Which you must be.”
Immediately upon going to the site, one is struck by the strange tension created between the modern web design and the prominent use of 60’s government-style propaganda. Nested between each image is a scathing set of commentary on our modern world. This works hand-in-hand with the music very well, and in fact each song takes its title from a correlative chapter.
What is wrong with you? What is right with you?
I have to say, I am enjoying this album immensely so far and at the same time have no real way to describe it except as highly experimental and varied. Free music is a wonderful thing, and these guys seem to be doing something right here. I definitely deeply appreciate the anti-soul-crushing-corporate-ephemera this album is touting. It might be a little weird for some, but I would say give this album a spin. It’s free after all. You can check out the album at Fake’s site and grab the official torrent from the Pirate Bay (links at the bottom of the story). The album contains 12 high quality mp3’s and a PDF booklet. I’m really going to have to sit down one day and take the time to listen to each track and meditate over each passage so that I can fully appreciate this album. My only complaint thus far is that I would have liked to have seen FLAC audio, but hey, these are 320 kbps mp3’s so, it’s nitpicking at this point.
