Weird Fishes: Arpeggi from flight404 on Vimeo.
This video was part of the Aniboom contest where Radiohead invited fans to create music videos for their last album, In Rainbows. The contest goes on until the 30th of June, and some of the entries are really spectacular, but this piece is particularly interesting as it was made entirely in a program called Processing, “an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions.” In other words, this was all done with an algorithm; lines of text and equations.
From Flight404,
I reused the application I wrote to make the Goldfrapp piece but went a few steps further. I manually input each bass beat, snare, highhat, and arpeggio note, not to mention all the vocals and syllable breaks. Crazy! It took about 6 hours but I think it was the right way to do it. I would have wasted much more time than that had I chosen to do the beat detection algorithmically. But man, scrubbing through that track, over and over, marking every note… it was a carpal pain.
Sounds like an intense project. It’s a joy to watch the custom-made visualization work so well with the music. Enjoy!
