Advertising is one of the dominant forces in our world today. I was watching some TV with a group of friends and it was noted some of the ads were just really exercises in psychology 101; the way they picked at people to “create a need,” They often did this by creating a sort of identity, one which they hope the consumer identifies with so that they would purchase their products.
No where is this more true than in the ads created by Unilever, the owners of the Dove brand, and, ironically, the Axe brand.
Exhibit A - The Famous Dove Ad:
Exhibit B - The Infamous Axe Ad:
It’s really amazing to watch one company speak out of both sides of their mouth simultaneously.
What’s the lesson then? Companies will tell you anything you want to hear to sell more products. Go with what works, what you like, and ignore the hype. (Same goes for my ads- they help support me, but just because they’re there doesn’t mean they’re good. I hope they’re relevant and helpful, but use your head).
